Middle School Rowing in Traverse City

Dedication. Perseverance. Excellence. #RowTritons

Traverse City Tritons Rowing middle school program open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys and girls. Our practices have been designed to teach younger athletes the teamwork and focus needed to row successfully while providing a fun and challenging atmosphere.

Why Rowing

Often considered the ultimate team sport, rowing is fundamentally built around a commitment to teamwork. Members of a crew learn to trust and work with one another on a very deep level, often forging strong and meaningful friendships in the process.

Rowing’s enormous potential to have a positive impact on young athletes has made it one of the fastest-growing high school sports in the country. Our middle school sessions facilitate both an introduction to the sport and an opportunity to prepare for high school rowing.

No Experience Needed!

Any 6th, 7th or 8th grade student can join our middle school rowing program. We teach the basics of both sweep rowing (one oar) in fours or eights and sculling (two oars) in doubles, quads, and octets.

We recommend new rowers and their families review the Rower’s Handbook to understand the equipment rules, practice expectations and inclement weather policy. Unfortunately, there are no makeups for weather canceled practices.

What are Practices Like?

Athletes start by learning the basics on either a rowing machine or in a boat on the dock. We will teach the basic stroke, proper body positioning, and oar control while on land to make getting on the water easier.

We continue working on the basics on-water and teach the teamwork required to row with other people.

By the end of the season, athletes will be able to row as an entire boat and will be working on improving efficiency and speed.

Parent Involvement

The boats range from about 30 feet long and 35 pounds all the way up to almost 60 feet long and 215 pounds. We ask that parents help the kids get the boats down to the dock each day at the start of practice and bring them back to the boatyard at the end of practice.
